Archival Overview
Formidable Bété warrior chief who organized fierce military resistance against French colonial subjugation across the central-western forest belt of Côte d'Ivoire between 1906 and 1912.
Biographical Record
Zokou Gbeuly was born circa 1850 in the Daloa region. As the supreme military chief of the Bété clans, Gbeuly maintained strict independence from external slavers and colonial trading posts.
When French colonial forces under Governor Gabriel Angoulvant launched the brutal pacification campaign across Côte d'Ivoire, Gbeuly organized guerilla resistance throughout the dense forests, repeatedly ambushing colonial columns. Captured after years of relentless warfare in 1912, he was executed or perished in captivity, remembered as a hero of indigenous freedom.
