"Our ancient polyphony is a sacred river; classical harmony merely gives it ocean breadth."

Archival Overview

Classical composer regarded as the founder of Georgian national opera, creator of 'Abesalom da Eteri' and 'Daisi'.

Biographical Record

Zakharia Paliashvili was a master composer, conductor, and musicologist who founded the Georgian classical operatic tradition by fusing traditional folk polyphony with classical orchestral form.

A student of Sergei Taneyev at the Moscow Conservatory, Paliashvili collected hundreds of authentic Georgian folk songs from highland villages, transcribing their unique modal harmonies.

His masterworks 'Abesalom da Eteri' and 'Daisi' became national cultural monuments, and musical motifs from his operas were later incorporated into the national anthem of Georgia.
