Biographical Record
Yrjö Henrik Kilpinen was born in Helsinki on February 4, 1892. Largely self-taught after studies in Vienna and Berlin, Kilpinen dedicated his life almost exclusively to vocal art song (Lied), composing over 790 songs.
His settings of Christian Morgenstern, Hans Fritz von Zwehl, and Eino Leino won fervent praise from German, British, and American critics; in 1935, the London Kilpinen Society was formed to promote his work. Elected to the Academy of Finland in 1948, his songs are celebrated for their stark, architectural economy and emotional intensity.
