Archival Overview
Revered humanist writer whose luminous short stories ('Legends of Stara Planina', 'Evenings at the Antimovo Inn', 'The White Swallow') celebrated moral goodness, forgiveness, and the golden wheatfields of Dobruja.
Biographical Record
Yordan Stefanov Yovkov was born on November 9, 1880, in the mountain village of Zheravna. Moving to Dobruja, Yovkov taught school in rural villages, developing an enduring love for the vast rolling plains and mixed communities of Bulgarians, Turks, and Tatars.
Serving as an infantry officer in the Balkan Wars and World War I, Yovkov transformed the horrors of conflict into meditations on human compassion in war stories like 'The White Swallow' (a symbol of hope for the sick). His 1927 collection Legends of Stara Planina and plays Albena and Boryana are timeless masterpieces exploring the redemptive power of beauty and conscience.
