Archival Overview
Revolutionary avant-garde poet and national martyr whose immortal hymn 'I Love My Sweet Armenia' and radical modernist verse captured the volcanic spirit of twentieth-century Armenian literature.
Biographical Record
Yeghishe Charents (born Soghomonian) was born on March 13, 1897, in Kars. Experiencing early combat in volunteer detachments during World War I and witnessing the Armenian retreat, Charents embraced the Bolshevik Revolution with fiery utopian passion, composing modernist, futurist, and constructivist poetry.
His 1920 lyric 'I Love My Sweet Armenia's Sun-Flavored Word' (Yes im anush Hayastani) became an unofficial national anthem of Armenian identity and longing for Mount Ararat. As Soviet cultural policy tightened under Stalin, Charents courageously defended artistic freedom and national dignity. Arrested in 1937, he was tortured and executed in a Yerevan prison hospital at age forty.
