Archival Overview

Pioneering Greek sculptor from Tinos whose masterpiece 'The Sleeping Maiden' (Koimomeni) is the crown jewel of modern Greek sculpture.

Biographical Record

Yannoulis Chalepas was Greece's greatest modern neoclassical and modernist sculptor, whose tragic life was matched by extraordinary artistic genius.

Born on the marble island of Tinos, Chalepas created the breathtaking funerary monument 'The Sleeping Maiden' (Koimomeni) in the First Cemetery of Athens at just twenty-six years of age.

After enduring decades of psychiatric internment and enforced silence, Chalepas experienced a miraculous creative rebirth in his final decades, producing raw, expressive terracotta and marble works that anticipated modern European expressionism.
