Archival Overview

Prominent Greek poet, Leftist resistance icon, and Lenin Peace Prize laureate, author of 'Epitaphios' and 'Romiosyne'.

Biographical Record

Yannis Ritsos was one of Greece's most prolific and passionate poets, enduring decades of political persecution, imprisonment, and internal exile on prison islands for his socialist convictions.

His 1936 poem 'Epitaphios', mourning a tobacco striker killed by police, was set to music by Mikis Theodorakis, becoming an immortal anthem of Greek popular resistance and working-class dignity.

Nominated multiple times for the Nobel Prize, Louis Aragon hailed him as 'the greatest living poet of our time'.
