In 1933, he published the two-volume epic Alastalon salissa (In the Parlour at Alastalo), in which a six-hour meeting of seafaring islanders planning to finance a barque is expanded into eight hundred pages of stream-of-consciousness introspection, linguistic exuberance, and temporal elasticity, recognized as the supreme pinnacle of 20th-century Finnish prose.
