Archival Overview
Beloved painter known as 'Maystora' (The Master) whose radiant, colorful portraits of Kyustendil peasant girls holding red apples in sunlit orchards became icons of Bulgarian fine art.
Biographical Record
Vladimir Dimitrov was born on February 1, 1882, in Frolosh. Studying at the School of Drawing in Sofia, fellow students gave him the nickname 'Maystora' ('The Master') for his extraordinary natural facility. He served as an official war artist in the Balkan Wars and World War I, capturing the harrowing reality of frontline trenches.
In the 1920s, rejecting European urbanism, Maystora settled in the village of Shishkovtsi in the Kyustendil valley. There he created his signature visual style: luminous, flat-patterned canvases blending post-impressionism with Byzantine iconography, depicting sun-drenched apple harvests, harvest reapers, and peasant brides. His studio in Kyustendil is preserved as the Vladimir Dimitrov-Maystora Art Gallery.
