Archival Overview
Brilliant, solitary painter who worked as a farmhand by day on the flat plains of Liminka and painted nocturnal masterpieces by night, renowned for haunting psychological self-portraits.
Biographical Record
Vilho Henrik Lampi was born in Oulu on July 19, 1898. After graduating from the Finnish Art Society Drawing School in Helsinki, Lampi chose to return to his family's farm in rural Liminka rather than chase commercial urban fame.
Laboring in the fields by day, Lampi painted in his loft at night: creating vast, pointillist nocturnal plains, village brawls, and intense self-portraits, such as Self-Portrait on the Road (1932). Following his 1936 exhibition in Oulu, overwhelmed by isolation and exhaustion, he jumped from a bridge into the icy Oulujoki river at thirty-seven.
