Archival Overview
Revered Greek songwriter, bouzouki virtuoso, and composer who brought Rebetiko into the mainstream of Greek popular culture.
Biographical Record
Vassilis Tsitsanis was the most influential songwriter and bouzouki virtuoso in 20th-century Greek urban music, affectionately recognized as the architect of modern Laïko music.
Operating his musical taverna in Thessaloniki during the dark years of German occupation, Tsitsanis composed immortal songs of sorrow, defiance, and beauty, including 'Cloudy Sunday' (Synefiasmeni Kyriaki), which became an unofficial national anthem of Greek resilience.
His vast discography bridged social classes and elevated the bouzouki into Greece's defining musical instrument.
