Archival Overview

National poet of Cyprus whose monumental epic poems 'The 9th of July 1821 in Nicosia' and 'The Woman of Chios' elevated the Cypriot Greek dialect to supreme tragic and lyrical height.

Biographical Record

Vassilis Michaelides was born circa 1849 in Lefkoniko. After studying painting in Italy and volunteering in the Thessalian Greek liberation forces in 1878, Michaelides settled in Limassol working as a sanitary inspector and nurse.

In 1911, he published his epic masterwork The 9th of July 1821 in Nicosia (I 9i Iouliou 1821), commemorating the martyrdom of Archbishop Kyprianos by Ottoman rulers. Written in rich, vibrant Cypriot Greek dialect, his verse captured the tragic soul, humor, and unconquerable endurance of Cyprus.
