Biographical Record
Uuno Kalervo Klami was born in Virolahti on September 20, 1900. After initial studies in Helsinki, Klami lived in Paris and Vienna in the 1920s, absorbing the kinetic polyrhythms of Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky.
His 1928 masterwork Karelian Rhapsody caused a sensation, followed by his supreme orchestral achievement, the Kalevala Suite (Op. 23, 1943), which depicted the creation of the earth and the forging of the Sampo with explosive, glittering French orchestration. In 1959, he was elected to the prestigious Academy of Finland.
