Archival Overview

Grenadian economist, diplomat, co-founder of the New Jewel Movement, and Minister of Foreign Affairs under Maurice Bishop.

Biographical Record

Unison Whiteman was an influential Grenadian economist, educator, and political leader who co-founded the Joint Endeavor for Welfare, Education, and Liberation (JEWEL) in 1972, which merged into the New Jewel Movement.

As Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1979 to 1983, Whiteman articulated Grenada's non-aligned, anti-imperialist foreign policy on the world stage, representing the nation at the United Nations, the Commonwealth, and CARICOM.

Remaining staunchly loyal to Maurice Bishop, Whiteman was murdered alongside him at Fort Rupert during the tragic October 1983 military coup.
