Archival Overview
Pioneering astronomer whose extraordinarily accurate naked-eye planetary observations, conducted at his island observatory Uraniborg on Hven, provided the empirical data that enabled Kepler's laws of planetary motion.
Biographical Record
Tyge Ottesen Brahe was born into Danish nobility on December 14, 1546. In November 1572, observing a brilliant new star in Cassiopeia, he proved in his treatise De nova stella that the celestial sphere was mutable, shattering Aristotelian cosmology.
Granted the island of Hven by King Frederick II, Tycho erected Uraniborg and Stjerneborg, constructing giant sextants and quadrants that measured planetary orbits with unprecedented accuracy. Later appointed Imperial Court Astronomer in Prague, his meticulous planetary logs on Mars enabled his assistant Johannes Kepler to discover the elliptical laws of planetary motion.
