Archival Overview
Visionary medieval sovereign who converted Bulgaria to Christianity in 864 and sheltered the expelled disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius, making Bulgaria the cradle of the Cyrillic alphabet.
Biographical Record
Boris I succeeded to the Bulgarian throne in 852. Recognizing that Bulgaria's polytheistic paganism left it isolated among Christian European monarchies and divided between Bulgars and Slavs, Boris enacted the Christianization of Bulgaria in 864, adopting the baptismal name Michael.
When the disciples of Cyril and Methodius (Clement, Naum, Angelarius) were banished from Moravia in 886, Boris welcomed them with imperial honors, funding the Preslav and Ohrid Literary Schools to train thousands of native clergy and scribes in the new Slavic Cyrillic alphabet. Retiring to a monastery in 889, he briefly emerged in armor in 893 to depose his apostate son Vladimir before installing Simeon I.
