Biographical Record
Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk was born in Hodonín on March 7, 1850. Professor of Philosophy at Charles University, Masaryk gained international respect for his relentless pursuit of moral truth—proving medieval manuscripts forged and courageously defending Leopold Hilsner in the anti-Semitic blood libel trial of 1899.
In 1914, Masaryk went into exile, uniting Western allies, forming the Czechoslovak Legions in Russia and France, and securing recognition for an independent republic. Elected President four times from 1918 to 1935, his ethical motto 'Truth Prevails' (Pravda vítězí) guided the nation.
