Archival Overview
Master bohemian lyricist and spiritual prince of modern Croatian poetry, author of 'Lelek sebra' and 'Kolajna', whose sonnets united Mediterranean metaphysics with existential sorrow.
Biographical Record
Augustin 'Tin' Ujević was born on July 5, 1891, in the tower of Dizdar-aga in Vrgorac. Educated in Split and Zagreb, Ujević lived a legendary bohemian existence across Paris, Belgrade, and Zagreb's cafés, writing poetry on napkins and cigarette packs.
With collections such as Lelek sebra (1920) and Kolajna (1926), he produced some of the most musically sublime sonnets in South Slavic literature, including 'Svakidašnja jadikovka' (Everyday Lament). A polyglot who translated Baudelaire, Poe, and Proust, Ujević remains the quintessential poet of Zagreb's cultural soul.
