Archival Overview
Passionate Irish-Canadian orator and Father of Confederation whose poetic vision of a new northern nationality inspired Confederation, and who became Canada's first assassinated politician.
Biographical Record
A former Young Ireland revolutionary who fled to the United States before settling in Montreal in 1857, McGee was captivated by the promise of Canada as a land free from the sectarian hatreds of the Old World. Elected to parliament, he became the most lyrical champion of Confederation.
McGee vigorously denounced the Fenian Brotherhood's violent raids into Canada, alienating radical Irish nationalists. On April 7, 1868, after delivering an impassioned parliamentary speech advocating national unity, McGee was shot dead outside his Ottawa boarding house in Canada's most notorious political assassination.
