Biographical Record
Tengiz Abuladze was a visionary Georgian cinematic auteur whose philosophical and visually rich films brought Georgian cinema to global prominence.
Abuladze completed an iconic film trilogy: 'The Plea' (1967), inspired by Vazha-Pshavela; 'The Wishing Tree' (1976); and 'Repentance' (Pokayanie, 1984), a bold, surrealist condemnation of totalitarianism and cults of personality.
Shelved initially by Soviet censors, 'Repentance' was released in 1987 under Glasnost, winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and triggering an international reckoning with historical oppression.
