Biographical Record
Tahar Sfar was born in Mahdia and studied law and political economy in Paris, where he was elected president of the Association of North African Muslim Students (AEMNA). Returning to Tunisia, he joined Habib Bourguiba, Bahri Guiga, and Mahmoud El Materi in breaking away from the conservative Destour.
At the historic Ksar Hellal Congress on March 2, 1934, Sfar drafted key platform resolutions that established the Neo-Destour. Interned by French colonial authorities in Bordj Le Boeuf in the southern desert, his health deteriorated severely, leading to his tragic death at age 38.
