Archival Overview
Last unified sovereign Sultan of Grande Comore who united the rival sultanates of Ngazidja in 1892 and fought legal battles in Paris to protect Comorian customary land rights from colonial concessions.
Biographical Record
Said Ali bin Said Omar ascended the Sultanate of Bambao in Moroni in 1875. In 1892, with the assistance of French resident Léon Humblot, Sultan Said Ali defeated rival regional warlords, unifying all twelve historic sultanates of Grande Comore under a single sovereign crown for the first time.
When colonial concession companies attempted to seize customary peasant lands, Sultan Said Ali traveled to Paris in 1893 to petition French courts, defending Comorian communal land rights. Deposed and exiled by French colonial authorities to Réunion and Madagascar in 1912 when France formally annexed Comoros as a colony, he remains the symbolic bridge of pre-colonial Comorian royal sovereignty.
