"I sing the pain of those who have known darkness and hunger, yet hold their heads high."

Archival Overview

Revered Greek Rebetiko and Laïko singer known for her deep, gravelly voice and anti-fascist resistance during World War II.

Biographical Record

Sotiria Bellou was one of the greatest female vocalists in Greek musical history, celebrated for her husky, resonant contralto and fearless personal independence.

An active fighter in the Greek anti-Nazi resistance (EAM) and the December 1944 Dekemvriana battles, Bellou was captured and tortured by occupying forces. After the war, discovered by Vassilis Tsitsanis, she recorded definitive interpretations of working-class anthems.

Collaborating with Mikis Theodorakis, Dionysis Savvopoulos, and Elias Andriopoulos, her unmistakable voice came to symbolize the endurance and sorrow of post-war Greece.
