Archival Overview
Foundational philosopher recognized as the 'Father of Christian Existentialism' whose profound works 'Either/Or', 'Fear and Trembling', and 'The Sickness unto Death' examined anxiety, faith, and individual subjective choice.
Biographical Record
Søren Aabye Kierkegaard was born in Copenhagen on May 5, 1813. Breaking his engagement to Regine Olsen to dedicate his life entirely to philosophical reflection, Kierkegaard published a torrential series of masterpieces under pseudonyms like Johannes de Silentio and Victor Eremita.
In works such as Enten - Eller (Either/Or) and Frygt og Bæven (Fear and Trembling), he attacked Hegelian abstract rationalism and the complacency of the state Church, arguing that truth is subjectivity and that living authentically requires a personal 'leap of faith' into the absurd.
