Biographical Record

Sonny Rupaire was a passionate poet, teacher, and political activist who championed Guadeloupean national liberation and Creole language legitimacy.

Drafted into the French military during the Algerian War of Independence, Rupaire deserted in 1961 in solidarity with the Algerian people, seeking political refuge in Cuba and Guinea before returning clandestinely to Guadeloupe in 1969.

His groundbreaking poetry collection 'Esta noche la noche / Gras a ka kouri' was written simultaneously in Guadeloupean Creole and French, expressing the fiery resistance and cultural pride of the Caribbean working class.
