Master composer and pianist regarded as the national father of Bolivian classical music, who elevated folk rhythms and the Bolivian cueca into concert hall masterpieces.
Biographical Record
Simeón Roncal was born on April 21, 1870, in Sucre, the constitutional capital of Bolivia. Showing prodigious talent at the keyboard, he became cathedral organist and chapel master at an early age, immersing himself in the polyphony of J.S. Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin while absorbing the vibrant indigenous and mestizo folk music of the Andes.
Roncal's genius lay in codifying and elevating the traditional cueca boliviana into sophisticated concert-level piano compositions. Works such as 'Lágrimas', 'El olvido', 'Huérfana Virginia', and his monumental 20 Cuecas para piano remain foundational treasures of Bolivian national music culture.
