Archival Overview
Foremost Australian modernist painter of the twentieth century whose iconic 1946–1947 'Ned Kelly' series—featuring the black square helmet—transformed Australian bush mythology into world modern art.
Biographical Record
Sir Sidney Nolan was born on April 22, 1917, in Melbourne to a working-class family of Irish descent. Associated with John and Sunday Reed's bohemian artistic circle at Heide in the 1940s, Nolan radically reimagined Australian landscape painting with rapid enamel paint and expressive, naive figuration.
His 27-canvas Ned Kelly series, painted at Heide between 1946 and 1947, turned the bushranger into a universal surrealist icon through the stark black slotted iron helmet silhouetted against burnt ochre landscapes. Exhibited at the Venice Biennale and prestigious museums across London and New York, Nolan was knighted in 1981.
