Archival Overview
Traditional monk and healer who led the historic 1930–1932 Saya San Peasant Rebellion against crushing British colonial head taxes and agricultural foreclosures during the Great Depression.
Biographical Record
Saya San was born on October 24, 1876, in Tabayin. A traditional medicine practitioner and astrologer, Saya San witnessed the absolute ruin of Burmese peasant farmers when global rice prices crashed in 1930 and British authorities brutally collected poll taxes by seizing land and cattle.
Proclaiming himself the Thupannaka Galon Raja (invoking the mythical mythical bird that slays dragons), Saya San mobilized thousands of impoverished rural peasants armed only with swords, bamboo spears, and protective tattoos. The rebellion swept across lower Burma, requiring two British-Indian army divisions to suppress. Defended in court by young lawyer Ba Maw, Saya San was hanged in Tharrawaddy in November 1931, becoming a legendary folk martyr.
