Brilliant journalist and diplomat who served as Equatorial Guinea's first Ambassador to the United Nations, presenting the newborn republic to the global community in 1968 before being martyred in the 1969 purges.

Biographical Record

Saturnino Ibongo Iyanga was born in Bata on October 18, 1936. Earning a degree in journalism in Madrid, Ibongo was one of the few Equatoguinean intellectuals of the late colonial era to write regularly for major international publications.

Joining MONALIGE, Ibongo participated actively in the 1967–1968 Constitutional Conference in Madrid that formulated the republic's independence charter. Appointed the country's first Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, his brilliant diplomatic career was tragically cut short when he was murdered in Bata during the March 1969 crisis.
