Archival Overview
Revered hermit monk and patron saint of the Bulgarian nation who founded the historic Rila Monastery in the 10th century, serving as the spiritual beacon of Bulgarian faith and identity.
Biographical Record
Saint John of Rila (Ivan Rilski) was born circa 876 in the village of Skrino. Giving away his earthly possessions, he retreated into the wild Rila Mountains, living an ascetic life of contemplation in caves and hollow trees, subsisting on wild plants and prayer.
His holy reputation for humility and healing miracles drew disciples, who established the famous Rila Monastery around his hermitage. Tsar Peter I of Bulgaria traveled hundreds of miles to seek his spiritual blessing, but the hermit humbly refused gold gifts, accepting only fruit. His Testament remains a cornerstone of Slavic monastic ethics, and Rila Monastery stands today as a UNESCO World Heritage sanctuary.
