"Democracy is like the coconut palm; it takes years of patient cultivation before its sweet water can quench the people's thirst."

Archival Overview

President of Comoros affectionately known as 'Papadjó' who dismantled Bob Denard's mercenary network, promulgated the democratic 1992 Constitution, and instituted the first multi-party elections.

Biographical Record

Said Mohamed Djohar was born on August 22, 1918, in Majunga to Comorian parents. Working as an educator, diplomat, and President of the Supreme Court of Comoros, Djohar assumed the presidency following Ahmed Abdallah's assassination in November 1989.

Djohar successfully secured French military intervention (Operation Oribi) to expel French mercenary leader Bob Denard, ending years of mercenary domination. In 1992, he promulgated a new progressive constitution guaranteeing multi-party democracy and human rights. Ousted by a final mercenary coup in 1995 and evacuated to Réunion, he returned home as a respected elder statesman, authoring his 2002 memoir Mémoires du président des Comores: Quelques vérités qui ne sauraient plaire à tout le monde.
