Biographical Record
Rufino José Cuervo was born on September 19, 1844, in Bogotá, the son of statesman Rufino Cuervo. Working in youth with his brother Ángel in a brewing enterprise to secure financial independence, Cuervo devoted the rest of his life entirely to the scientific study of the Spanish language.
His 1872 Apuntaciones críticas sobre el lenguaje bogotano founded modern dialectology. Moving to Paris in 1882, Cuervo labored for three decades in monastic solitude at the Bibliothèque Nationale, publishing the first two volumes of his monumental Diccionario de construcción y régimen de la lengua castellana, praised across Europe and the Americas as a masterpiece of philology. The Instituto Caro y Cuervo in Bogotá preserves his immortal legacy.
