Archival Overview
Paramount King of the Duala people who led the legal and diplomatic resistance against German colonial expropriation of native lands, executed by hanging on August 8, 1914, as Cameroon's foremost national martyr.
Biographical Record
Rudolf Duala Manga Bell was born on April 24, 1873, in Douala, the son of King Manga Ndumbe Bell. Educated in Aalen, Germany, he returned to succeed his father as King of the Duala in 1908. Fluent in German, English, and French, Bell governed with legal brilliance and progressive foresight.
When German colonial governor Otto Gleim ordered the forced expropriation of ancestral Duala waterfront lands on the Wouri River to build racially segregated European settlements, King Bell dispatched formal petitions to the German Reichstag in Berlin and organized an anti-colonial alliance across Cameroonian ethnic leaders. Arrested in May 1914, he was executed by hanging alongside Ngosso Din on August 8, 1914. His mausoleum in Douala stands as a national shrine of freedom.
