Archival Overview
Legendary Jewish-Greek singer of Smyrna-style Rebetiko and traditional Ottoman cafe-aman songs.
Biographical Record
Roza Eskenazi (born Sarah Skinazi) was the supreme diva of early Greek urban popular song and Smyrna-style Rebetiko during the interwar era.
Born in Istanbul to a Sephardic Jewish family and raised in Thessaloniki and Athens, Eskenazi recorded hundreds of modal melodies across Greek, Turkish, Armenian, and Ladino languages, mastering intricate microtonal vocal flourishes.
During World War II, she ran an underground safehouse in Athens, sheltering resistance fighters and Jewish families from Nazi deportation, recognized for both musical genius and personal heroism.
