Biographical Record
Roussan Camille was a distinguished lyrical poet, essayist, and diplomat from Jacmel who played an influential role in Caribbean anti-colonial literature.
Serving as Haiti's consul in Paris and later diplomat in New York, Camille published his celebrated poetry collection 'Assaut à la nuit' in 1940, containing the immortal poem 'Nedje', which lamented the exploitation of Black dancers in Casablanca.
Praised warmly by Langston Hughes and Aimé Césaire, Camille's verse combined intimate lyrical melancholy with passionate pan-African anti-imperialist solidarity.
