Archival Overview
Physician, politician, and fiery anti-imperialist leader who led the 1915 northern revolution opposing United States intervention.
Biographical Record
Dr. Rosalvo Bobo was a prominent Haitian physician and nationalist political leader whose uncompromising opposition to American financial control defined the 1915 crisis.
Leading the revolutionary forces that overthrew President Vilbrun Guillaume Sam in July 1915, Bobo was the overwhelming popular favorite to assume the presidency. However, US Admiral Caperton deemed him too fiercely independent and anti-American, landing Marines to install a compliant candidate instead.
Refusing to collaborate with the occupation forces, Bobo lived in dignified exile in Jamaica and France, revered as a principled defender of Haitian financial and political independence.
