Biographical Record
Rogelia Cruz Martínez was an architecture student, beauty queen, and courageous political dissident who became Miss Guatemala in 1959 and competed in the Miss Universe pageant.
Using her platform and resources to assist marginalized communities, Cruz joined the resistance movement against military rule, providing logistics and shelter to student activists and the Rebel Armed Forces (FAR).
Kidnapped in December 1967 by the clandestine death squad Mano Blanca, she was subjected to horrific torture before her murdered body was found near Escuintla, sparking widespread international outcry against state violence in Guatemala.
