Archival Overview
One of the twentieth century's supreme modernist novelists whose monumental philosophical masterpiece 'Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften' ('The Man Without Qualities') dissected the decline of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Biographical Record
Robert Musil was born on November 6, 1880, in Klagenfurt. Initially training as a military cadet and mechanical engineer before earning a doctorate in philosophy and psychology at the University of Berlin, Musil brought scientific precision and skeptical irony to modern fiction.
His debut novel, The Confusions of Young Törless (1906), analyzed adolescent psychology and proto-authoritarian violence. From 1921 until his death, he worked on his colossal magnum opus, Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften, setting the intellectual paralysis of the Habsburg realm ('Kakania') against modern existential crisis. Fleeing the Nazi Anschluss in 1938, he died in impoverished exile in Geneva.
