Archival Overview
Guatemalan impressionist composer and professor who fused French musical impressionism with indigenous Maya mythology.
Biographical Record
Ricardo Castillo was an avant-garde composer and brother of Jesús Castillo who pioneered orchestral impressionism in Central American classical music.
Educated in Paris at the Conservatoire de Paris, Castillo was deeply influenced by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel before returning to Guatemala in 1922 to teach harmony and composition at the National Conservatory.
His evocative symphonic poems, including 'Guatemala', 'La Procesión', and 'Paál Kabá', rendered the atmospheric landscapes, colonial processions, and Mayan myths of Guatemala with delicate orchestral colors.
