Archival Overview

Supreme leader of the Arbegnoch patriot resistance who commanded guerrilla forces in the mountains of Shewa throughout the five-year Italian fascist occupation, later serving as Prime Minister of Ethiopia.

Biographical Record

Abebe Aregai was born on August 18, 1903, in Shewa. Serving as Chief of Police of Addis Ababa prior to the 1935 invasion, Abebe rejected Italian terms of surrender, marching his officers into the rugged mountains of Menz and Tegulet.

Elected supreme leader of the patriot resistance, Abebe survived mustard gas attacks, aerial bombardments, and Italian bounty hunters, mounting continuous ambushes that tied down over 100,000 fascist troops. Entering Addis Ababa beside Emperor Haile Selassie in 1941, he was elevated to Ras and served as Minister of Defense and Prime Minister from 1957 until his tragic death in the 1960 palace coup.
