Biographical Record
Ramón Matías Mella Castillo was born in Santo Domingo on February 25, 1816. Joining La Trinitaria in 1838, Mella was Duarte's most daring military strategist, negotiating alliances with anti-Boyer reformist forces.
On the night of February 27, 1844, when hesitation threatened the uprising at the Puerta de la Misericordia, Mella boldly fired his blunderbuss (trabucazo) into the sky, rallying the patriots to seize the garrison. In the 1863 Restoration War against Spain, Mella served as Vice-President, authoring the army's manual on guerrilla warfare before dying wrapped in the national flag.
