Archival Overview
Second President of Botswana and co-founder of the BDP whose prudent macroeconomic stewardship and diamond revenues guided Botswana's transition into Africa's most stable and prosperous democracy.
Biographical Record
Sir Ketumile Quett Masire was born on July 23, 1925, in Kanye. Working as a master teacher and progressive commercial farmer, Masire co-founded the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in 1961 alongside Seretse Khama, serving as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Development Planning upon independence in 1966.
Assuming the presidency in 1980 following Khama's death, Masire stewarded Botswana through the dangerous regional turbulence of the apartheid era, co-founding the Southern African Development Community (SADC). His fiscal discipline and institutional transparency turned diamond wealth into universal education, roads, and healthcare. Stepping down voluntarily in 1998, he served as a respected international peace mediator in the DRC and Kenya.
