Archival Overview
Fearless Pipil indigenous feminist and writer who in 1930 made history as the very first woman in Latin America to run for President of the Republic, braving ridicule and prison to pioneer women's suffrage.
Biographical Record
Prudencia Ayala was born into an impoverished Pipil indigenous family in Sonzacate on April 28, 1885. Working as a seamstress while educating herself, Ayala began publishing visionary articles demanding equal rights for women and supporting Sandino's anti-imperialist struggle in Nicaragua, suffering imprisonment in both Guatemala and El Salvador.
In 1930, carrying her trademark walking cane, she declared her candidacy for the Presidency of El Salvador. Though the Supreme Court rejected her registration, her audacious campaign provoked a national debate on women's legal rights, culminating in the recognition of female suffrage in 1950.
