Archival Overview

Legendary 12th-century equestrian warrior princess of Gambaga regarded as the maternal ancestor of the Mossi people; the Golden Stallion of Yennenga is the supreme trophy of FESPACO.

Biographical Record

Princess Yennenga was born circa 1100, the beloved daughter of King Nedega of the Dagomba Kingdom (modern northern Ghana). Renowned for her unmatched skill on horseback and archery, she commanded her father's royal cavalry, winning decisive victories against neighboring Malinké forces.

When her father refused to let her marry because he valued her military leadership, Yennenga fled on her white stallion, escaping northward into the forests of modern Burkina Faso. There she met an elephant hunter named Riale. Their union produced a son named Ouedraogo ('Stallion'), who founded the historic Mossi kingdoms of Tenkodogo and Ouagadougou. The prestigious Étalon de Yennenga at FESPACO honors her immortal equestrian bravery.
