Visionary Haitian painter from Jacmel known worldwide for his fantastical spiral cities and imaginary mountain coastlines.
Biographical Record
Préfète Duffaut was an internationally celebrated painter from Jacmel whose visionary dreamscapes created one of the most recognizable visual styles in Latin American and Caribbean art.
Inspired by visions of the Vodou spirit of the sea, La Sirène, Duffaut painted gravity-defying imaginary cities with spiraling roads, rainbow bridges, and vibrant houses ascending into the clouds above blue coastal bays.
He contributed magnificent murals to the Holy Trinity Cathedral in 1951, and his works are exhibited in major museums across Europe and the Americas.
