"My art is not made of wood and bronze alone; it is carved from the dreams of my ancestors."

Archival Overview

Master Guyanese sculptor and painter who sculpted the monumental 1763 Monument (Cuffy) in Georgetown.

Biographical Record

Philip Moore was a self-taught visionary sculptor, painter, and poet whose monumental wooden and bronze sculptures celebrated African-Guyanese spiritual cosmology.

A former sugarcane worker and rural policeman, Moore experienced mystical artistic visions that guided his hand in wood carving. In 1976, he was commissioned to sculpt the towering bronze 1763 Monument at Square of the Revolution in Georgetown, depicting the rebel leader Cuffy.

His vibrant paintings and intricate wood totems incorporated indigenous Amerindian petroglyphs and African ancestral motifs, earning him the prestigious Cacique's Crown of Honour.
