Archival Overview
Master symbolist poet whose tragic, incandescent lyrical verse ('Two Souls', 'Armenians') and armed guerrilla service in Macedonia made him one of Bulgaria's most romantic and tragic literary figures.
Biographical Record
Peyo Kracholov Yavorov was born on January 13, 1878, in Chirpan. Working as a rural telegraphist, he published early social poems like 'The Hailstorm' before joining Dr. Krastyo Krastev's avant-garde literary circle Misal ('Thought') in Sofia, pioneering Bulgarian literary symbolism.
Deeply devoted to the liberation of Bulgarian-populated Macedonia, Yavorov joined Gotse Delchev's guerrilla detachments (cheti) in the Balkan mountains, editing underground liberation newspapers. His exquisite lyricism reached sublimity in poems dedicated to his muse Mina Todorova and wife Lora Karavelova. Following Lora's tragic suicide, blind and heartbroken from public accusations, Yavorov took his own life in October 1914 at age thirty-six.
