Archival Overview
Legendary haiduk voyvoda and military commander who fought Ottoman forces across Thrace and the Rhodope Mountains for decades and joined Giuseppe Garibaldi's redshirts in Italy.
Biographical Record
Petko Kiryakov Kaloyanov was born on December 18, 1844, in Doganhisar. Following the murder of his brother by Ottoman bashi-bazouks, Petko formed an armed guerrilla detachment (cheta), becoming the scourge of Ottoman garrisons across western Thrace and the Rhodopes.
In 1866, he traveled to Italy to join Giuseppe Garibaldi's volunteer battalion in the Cretan Revolt, receiving the rank of captain. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, his detachment liberated the Maritsa valley and protected hundreds of thousands of Christian and Muslim refugees from roving marauders. A monumental statue by Valentin Starchev honors him on Bunardzhika Hill in Plovdiv.
