Archival Overview
Heroic Ban of Croatia, victorious Ottoman fighter, and poet who led the Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy against Habsburg imperial absolutism, executed as an immortal martyr of Croatian independence.
Biographical Record
Count Petar Zrinski was born on June 6, 1621, into one of the most illustrious noble dynasties of Central Europe. A brilliant military commander who repeatedly crushed Ottoman forces in battle, Zrinski also translated his brother Nikola's epic into Croatian verse as Adrijanskoga mora sirena.
Outraged by the humiliating 1664 Peace of Vasvár imposed by Vienna, Zrinski joined his brother-in-law Fran Krsto Frankopan to lead a conspiracy for Croatian autonomy. Betrayed and lured to Vienna, both were condemned to death and beheaded at Wiener Neustadt in 1671. Their remains were reburied with national honors in Zagreb Cathedral in 1919.
