Biographical Record
Paul Nikolai Kogerman was born in Tallinn on December 5, 1891. Graduating with highest distinction from the University of Tartu and Imperial College London, Kogerman devoted his scientific career to cracking the chemical structure of Estonia's mineral treasure: kukersite oil shale.
Appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Tartu and later Rector of the Tallinn Technical University (now TalTech), Kogerman published foundational studies on shale oil polymerisation and synthetic fuels. Deported to a Soviet Gulag camp in Sverdlovsk in 1941, he survived to return to Tallinn, directing the Institute of Chemistry until his death in 1951.
